Cooking with the kids is a great way to enjoy family time, and Aldi have some great family recipes on their website...
Letting the kids decide what they want for Sunday lunch can be a tricky one - chocolate pizza, baked beans with jelly! - the creations can be endless and almost stomach turning, so we looked to Aldi for some great, easy to cook, tasty ideas.
The challenge was to cook a yummy (sensible) Sunday lunch and a pudding, shop for the ingredients and then get busy in the kitchen - perfect for a cold damp Sunday.
Not being a regular shopper to Aldi, but having one opened up in the area recently, we were surprised at the great value prices and range of items.
Main dish - Crackling Pork Leg Joint with Roasted Apples:
Delicious! The massive joint of meat cost around £5 and would easily of fed 5-6 adults. The recipe was simple and easy to follow, taking about 5 minutes to prepare. The meat roasted in cider for around 2 hours, resulting in a succulent easy to carve joint, bursting with flavour.
Side dish - Sweet Potato Dauphinoise:
Cheap to buy and so easy to prepare, the result was soft, tasty and rich in flavour. This was a hit all round and will certainly be on the menu again. Its adaptable with a variety of dishes and would totally recommend this recipe.
Pudding - Baked Nectarines:
This one was a little more difficult. The nectarines were not available and the nearest thing we could find was peaches in a tin! As we had pre-chosen our recipe, we had to stick with it and adapt. Tin peaches were the only alternative and this was accompanied by fresh pears, which we cut in half and substituted in the recipe. The result was quite surprising considering we had amended the recipe quite considerably... Lovely warm peaches and pears, drizzled in honey with soft luxury vanilla ice-cream on the side. A great end to a fantastic meal.
Why not put some of the Aldi recipes to the test yourself??? There are hundreds of great value ideas and recipes available on their website www.aldi.co.uk - we will be sure to visit our new local Aldi store again soon.
